April 6
5th Sunday of Lent
- The Third Scrutiny of the Elect may be celebrated.
- If the scrutiny IS celebrated, the readings are taken from Year A (34): the Raising of Lazarus.
- If the scrutiny IS NOT celebrated, then the readings are taken from Year C for the 5th Sunday of Lent.
- The practice of covering crosses and images throughout the church may be observed. Crosses are covered until Good Friday, but images remain covered until the beginning of the Easter Vigil
- The 5th Week of Lent is also called "Passiontide." Last two weeks of Lent - Passion Week and Holy Week.

Lenten Weekdays
- For Christian Initiation: The Handing On of the Lord's Prayer may take place this week (OCIA, 178-184).
- Mass proper is taken from the weekdays of the 5th Week of Lent
- Preface I of the Passion of the Lord is used this week.

- Ritual Masses are prohibited this week and weddings outside Mass are discouraged.
- On Good Friday and Holy Saturday, the sacraments are not celebrated.
- Funeral Masses are permitted on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday of Holy Week.

Chrism Mass
Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, 7:00 PM
- The Chrism Mass will be celebrated on Monday of Holy Week at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels at 7:00 PM. No other services should be scheduled on this evening in the Archdiocese.
- Each parish is required to identify one individual who will be responsible for picking up the newly blessed and consecrated oils following the Chrism Mass

Octave of Easter
- The first eight days of the Easter Season make up the octave of Easter and are celebrated as solemnities of the Lord (Ceremonial of Bishops, 373).
- The Gloria is to be sung or recited during the octave of Easter.
- The Sequence is optional during the days of the octave (GIRM, 64).
- The double Alleluia is added to the dismissal formulary during the octave of Easter (Easter Vigil, 69).
- Paschal Candle should be lit and remains by the ambo until Pentecost.
- Consider using the Sprinkling Rite instead of the Penitential Act.
- Creed is not said.
- Preface I of Easter is used.
- Solemn Blessing #6 for Easter Time may be used during the octave.
April 27
2nd Sunday of Easter
"Sunday of Divine Mercy"
- The celebration of Divine Mercy flows from the Church’s most important day, which is Easter Sunday, thus the faithful should be able to celebrate and recognize it as such.
- Devotional practices to the Divine Mercy may not take place during Mass.
- On this Sunday of Divine Mercy, prayers for the plenary indulgence that are offered today should be led by priests after Masses.

- Creed is said.
- Since it is the last day of the octave, the sequence may be sung.
- Use Preface I of Easter with Eucharistic Prayer I

The Book of Blessings, Ch. 55 has a special blessing to be used, and the following petition may be added:
- For all mothers, that they may be blessed in their love and care for their families. May the Holy Spirit continue to guide them with wisdom and love, We pray to the Lord.

- The Mass is celebrated this evening either before or after Evening Prayer I of the Solemnity.
LITURGICAL NOTE
***Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord***
- Our ecclesiastical province (and most dioceses in USA) has transferred this Solemnity from Thursday, May 29 to Sunday, June 1.
- The weekdays after the Ascension through the Saturday before Pentecost is a time of preparation for the coming of the Holy Spirit.
- During these days the hymn, Veni Creator Spiritus, may be sung at Mass and Liturgy of the Hours.
- Paschal Candle is lit.
- White Vestments are used.
- Two sets of formularies to be used:
- 1) At the Vigil Mass (Saturday Evening)
- 2) At the Mass during the day (Sunday)
- Readings (Vigil Mass & Mass during the Day): 58: Acts 1-11; Ps 47:2-3, 6-9; Eph 1:17-23 or Heb 9:24-28; 10, 19-23; Lk 24:46-53
- Gloria is sung.
- Apostle's Creed may be used during the Easter Season.
- Use Preface I or II of the Ascension
- Use Solemn Blessing #7.
- Double Alleluia is NOT sung during the dismissal.
